Indoor Air: 5 Tips for Making your Kitchen Less Toxic

I hate to break it to you, but your home indoor air is not your “Safe Haven”, especially in the heart of it: Kitchen. Thankfully, there are some powerful antidotes to most indoor pollutants.

If you follow these tips, your Indoor Air will be at least 518% Less Harmful!

1) Use Splatter Screen

This is one of those kitchen tools we never thought we needed. A splatter screen does what it says: screens splatters. What you should do is to put it over the top of a frying pan. It contains tiny organic particles from oils, fat, and grease that spread harmful PM2.5 particulates all over the house.

2) Avoid Pans containing PTFE

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating on the pans turns into toxic Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). In the high heat, releasing harmful fumes into your indoor air.

You should check out this Netflix documentary called “The Devil We Know” and you’ll probably know what I’m talking about. For the record, I’m not getting paid to promote the documentary here, it’s simply worth watching!

Go for safer, non-toxic materials like carbon steel, ceramic, lava rock, porcelain enamel, or tempered glass.

3) Clean or Replace ventilation filter at least once a year

While this may seem like a no-brainer, 70% of the people we asked in a survey answered: ‘I didn’t know. I had to change it’.

Cooking with natural gas might be hazardous to your health, we’re talking as bad as smoking cigarettes!!

What to do?

Natural gas and propane stoves can release carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and other harmful pollutants into the indoor air. It can be toxic to our health, but I get it food somehow tastes better. Even when using electric stoves, cooking, in general, can generate unhealthy air pollutants. Mostly from heating oil, fat, and other food ingredients, especially at high temperatures.

If your ventilation is clogged with grease the air can’t pass through. Eventually, you’ll end up wasting energy and damaging your health.

4) Place a plant or two in the Kitchen to purifier indoor air

If you’re like me who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, plants can be a great company!

Plants have superpowers, they can remove pollutants from the indoor air by absorbing gases through their leaves and roots. The microorganisms that live in the soil of potted plants also play an instrumental role in neutralizing VOCs and others. Click here for more information.

5) Avoid cleaning your stovetop when it’s still hot.

Cleaning products, including dish detergents, contain hundreds of chemicals that enable them to cut through the grease. Try not to rush into cleaning your stove right after cooking. Avoid the chemical fumes from evaporating and penetrating right through your lungs.

Bottom line is, while many of us love cooking, we should be a bit careful with our indoor air. Simple yet effective steps can yield great results.
